Martinborough Vineyard is a pioneer of pinot noir in New Zealand and a pioneer of the region. It was established in 1980 with the objective of producing world class cool climate wines from classical grape varieties.
Martinborough Vineyard came to international attention when it won the Bouchard Finlayson Trophy for "The Best Pinot Noir Worldwide" at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Challenge in London in 1997.
The drive to produce the very best wines imbues the entire company from every aspect. Martinborough Vineyard is ISO 14001 certified which means there is an internationally recognised, clear and audited environmental policy based on the principles of minimum impact on the land and air that provides the bounty.
Grapes are handpicked to ensure that only the best fruit makes it to the bottle. Much of the wine making process is based on Burgundian techniques which have produced some of the world’s most complex and delicate red wines for centuries.
Martinborough Vineyard has become renowned for its pinot noir. A lesser-known story, however, has been the success of its other varieties. Over the past few years Martinborough Vineyard has won acclaim for its chardonnay, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, riesling and late harvest riesling. This more than vindicates the company’s early plan “to plant a small area and prove that great wine could be made in the Martinborough district.”
