Coney

Hand-tended wines with personality

For Tim and Margaret Coney, what was first envisaged as a gentle descent into middle-aged retirement turned into a thriving bustle of vine tending, winemaking, marketing and and cafe-running, in the time-honoured tradition of manual labour. The Coney’s love of music, the basis for their logo, is celebrated in individual wine names and song on their website.

The Trio Café offers guests a quintessential vineyard experience, with Margaret’s cuisine matched with the award-winning Coney wines as they dine amongst the vines in an elegant courtyard with a vineyard vista.  The irrepressible Tim provides informative and amusing tastings.

Initial plantings of pinot noir and riesling were completed in 1996, with pinot gris and syrah following in 2003.  The wines are:

  • The Flagship Pizzicato Pinot Noir, carefully constructed from 7 clones and hand-tended according to best Martinborough practice
  • Ragtime Riesling, off-dry and designed to loosen your tongue
  • Rallentando Riesling, designed to age and partner chicken or fish
  • Piccolo Pinot Gris, dry and opulent
  • Que Sera Syrah, stylish and Rhone-like
