Winegrowing pioneer Clive Paton bought a barren 5 hectare paddock on the edge of Martinborough in 1980, attracted by the area's three key features:
He chose mainly red varieties and set out determinedly in pursuit of world class wines. Pinot noir's potential shone from the start, the early wines widely appreciated for their texture and pure fruit expression. Clive also dreamed of creating a renegade red which he called Célèbre, now a sought-after blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Clive, his wife Phyll (formerly a winemaker) and sister Alison (ex London wine trade) own Ata Rangi and work full time in the business. Talented winemaker Helen Masters joined the team in 1994, giving Clive a little more time to focus on his conservation efforts, planting thousands of native trees at the Ata Rangi Bush Block, 20km south of Martinborough.
Insecticides have never been used, and Ata Rangi is strongly committed to sustainability, bio-diversity is encouraged with the use of inter-row wildflower planting, composting, and mixed native shelter belts. Ata Rangi is also one of very few wineries world-wide accredited with the international environmental management system, ISO14001.
US wine guru Robert Parker gave Ata Rangi the top ‘Outstanding: 5 Stars’ rating in his 7th Edition Wine Buyer’s Guide, commenting "When I asked winemakers to name New Zealand's greatest producers, one name kept coming up: Ata Rangi.”
