The winemakers of Martinborough are as individual in character as they are determined in spirit. From the smallest plot to the largest operation, they are men and women of fierce pride, strong opinions and pioneer-like purpose.

Winemakers of rare calibre who between them produce Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Riesling, Gewurztraminer; Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Rose and dessert wines to nationally and internationally recognised standards of excellence.

The winemakers of Martinborough were the nation’s original Pinot pioneers. In the early 1980s it took people with vision, expertise, determination and a deep love for wine to believe, “why not?” 

Many of the original winemakers remain working today, as always embracing innovation and flexibility – while respecting tradition. Such thinking and commitment continues to lure exciting young winemakers to Martinborough from all over the world. Knowledge and enthusiasm is shared. New wine styles emerge and the journey continues.

The original pioneers in Martinborough took a huge gamble to develop vineyards in this farming town.

Martinborough has more experience with Pinot Noir and other mainstream varieties than any other NZ region.
