Climate
Cool, Calm, Collected
Shielded from the elements by steep mountains, Martinborough days are dry, nights fresh and the weather mellow and understanding.
The growing season from flowering to harvest is amongst the longest in New Zealand, while naturally breezy conditions control vine vigour, creating lower yields of grapes with greater intensity.
A genuine cool climate with the longest, driest and warmest autumn in NZ, therefore the longest hang time for the grapes. Dramatic temperature variation between day and night are a key element.
Situated in the middle of New Zealand creating protection from extreme weather patterns, Martinborough is able to maintain high quality from year to year.
A shielded valley brings a rain shadow and an element of continental climate. The Martinborough climate occurs in a very limited and defined area.
Dry autumns stretch out languidly, allowing grapes more than the usual ripening period and harvesters more than the usual time to complete their work with care. This is vine weather. It’s there somehow in the last lingering of light. Genuine cool climate viticulture - the only way to produce premium wines of international standing.
